Today’s New Covenant nugget is from 1 Samuel 30:6 (AMPC)

David was greatly distressed, for the men spoke of stoning him because the souls of them all were bitterly grieved, each man for his sons and daughters. But David encouraged and strengthened himself in the Lord his God.

Every believer goes through challenging times, how we handle those times can either make us or break us…

We can get in the flesh in times of challenge, or, like David, we can encourage and strengthen ourselves in the Lord. The enemy wants to lure us into fleshly discouragement, hopelessness, fear and depression, but we do not have to fall into his trap.

David was on the brink of breakthrough and the promise of him becoming king was about to become a reality – David did not know how close he was to breakthrough. Right before David’s breakthrough he faced one of the biggest challenges in his life - the Amalekites had invaded Ziklag and burned it to the ground… then they took the women and children captive. David and the mighty men who were with him lifted up their voices and wept, until they had no more power to weep. They turned on him and wanted to kill him.

After David wiped away the tears, he did not stay in a place of defeat, he encouraged and strengthened himself in the Lord his God.

As you read the Psalms you can see how David did that over and over again, every time that he faced a challenge. David encouraged himself by standing on the Word and reciting and confessing the Word – he encouraged and strengthened himself through worship – and he encouraged himself by remembering the faithfulness of God in times past. David declared, “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”

After David encouraged and strengthened himself in the Lord, they pursued their enemies and defeated them and took back their wives and children and possessions. - the very next day Saul was defeated and died in battle against the Philistines and within weeks David became king of Judah.

Many times our biggest challenges are right before our breakthrough… do not lose heart, encourage and strengthen yourself in the Lord today! Victory is at hand!
