Today’s devotion is from John 8:31-32

Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My Word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Knowing the truth is more than mental assent or understanding the Word, knowing the truth is revelation knowledge that leads to living and abiding in the truth of the Word. You can know something, but not do it – you can know something, but reject it, and you can know something, and not embrace it…

The Passion Translation says, “When you continue to embrace all that I teach, you prove that you are my true followers. For if you embrace the truth, it (the truth that you embrace) will release more freedom into your lives.” (Emphasis mine)

The Amplified Bible, Classic Edition says, “If you abide in My Word [hold fast to My teachings and live in accordance with them], you are truly My disciples. And you will know the Truth, and the Truth (the truth that you know and live in accordance with) will set you free. (Emphasis mine)

The key to freedom is in the doing – revelation knowledge must translate into doing, and then doing with translate into freedom! You can read a book on how to ride a bicycle, take a test, and get an ‘A’ on the test and still not KNOW how to ride a bicycle. The knowing is in the doing – as you apply the truth in the book while on the bicycle, you begin to experience the freedom of riding a bicycle.

We all understand the great commission - many of us can even quote it, but sadly, too many believers have never DONE the great commission – they have never cast out a devil, healed the sick, preached the gospel or made disciples – they have been taught the great commission, but they do not KNOW it and are not doing it or experiencing the freedom and the blessing that comes from doing it.

Take little baby steps today and begin to do what you have learned, then you shall know the truth and the truth that you know, embrace and abide in will set you free!
