Today’s devotion is from Proverbs 4:23
Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
The Passion Translation says, ‘So above all, guard the affections of your heart, for they affect all that you are. Pay attention to the welfare of your innermost being, for from there flows the wellspring of life.’
Paul the apostle tells us to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ – Luke 8:18 tells us to take heed how we hear, or to pay close attention to what we are listening to – Guarding your heart includes being spirit led in what we say, what we hear, what we think and what we are looking at of focusing on – Our hearts [our souls] determine the course of our life!
Your heart needs to be a wellspring of life, not a death swamp full of decaying carcasses…
Your heart, or your soul needs to prosper and be full of joy, peace and life because all prosperity is linked to the prosperity of your soul or the condition of your heart.
The Word of God is what guards your heart…
Ephesians 6:17 calls the Word the SWORD of the Spirit - Hebrews 4:12 compares the Word of God to a sword that pierces and protects… ‘The Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.’ The Word discerns the good from the bad, the living from the dead and the intent of everything that tries to get in your heart – so, when we keep our hearts full of the Word, the Word in our hearts will act as a anointed filter, filtering out all death and darkness before it gets to us.
Listen to the Word being preached, read the Word, meditate on the Word, declare the Word, discuss the Word with others, sing the Word and study books about the Word – get your heart full and overflowing with the Word and the Word will guard your heart and fill it with life, power, peace, joy and blessing!
