Today’s devotion is from 1 Peter 5:8
‘Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.’
The devil cannot just walk right up to you and rob you of your health, peace or family. He cannot just come into your life to enforce disease and destruction.
If the devil can do that, then he does not have to walk about “seeking whom he may devour.” He only has to walk straight up to anyone he wants to devour and devour him! But since the Bible says that he goes about seeking whom he may devour, the truth then is that there are people whom he cannot devour.
In fact the only believers that are devourable are those who do not know who they are in Christ, those that are deceived and those who do not walk according to the truth that they know.
In the wild, lions prey on the weak, the separated and the venerable… That is how the devil operates; he seeks out those believers who are fearful, apprehensive, those who are weak in faith, discouraged and those believers who are deceived into believing that it is God’s will for them to be sick, defeated and in poverty.
Those of us who are strong in faith, who know who we are in Christ, those of us who are full of the Word, full of power, authority and full of the anointing are undevourable! Satan is under our feet and nothing shall by any means harm us!
Lets look at 1 Peter 5:5-9…
Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith...
There are seven nuggets of gold that Peter the apostle gives in this passage to remain undevourable…
1. BE SUBMISSIVE
‘All of you be submissive to one another’. Yield to the truth and the anointing in others. New Covenant Christianity is a team, not a solo mission. If every believer would connect themselves to believers of like faith and submit themselves to one another, then the devil would never be able to isolate them, get to them or devour them.
2. HUMBLE YOURSELF
‘Be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.' Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God’. New Covenant humility is God reliance – not self-reliance. When we put our trust in the Lord and when we operate according to His strength, we are truly undevourable!
3. CAST YOUR CARES UPON HIM
‘Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you’. Trust the Lord with your cares, cast your burdens unto Jesus! When believers allow themselves to be weighed down by the cares of this world, they become vulnerable to the schemes of the devil. Cast your cares upon Jesus and leave them there! With Jesus carrying your cares, you will remain undevourable!
4. BE SOBER-MINDED - BE IN CONTROL OF YOUR THOUGHTS
‘Be sober’. The Greek word ‘sober’ literally means to have a disciplined mindset. Don’t just let any thought take over your mind. Take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ and you will be numbered among the undevourable!
5. BE ALERT AND WATCHFUL
The Greek word for ‘alert’ literally means to be watchful and to be on guard. We are not to be on guard out of fear or be suspicious of others, we are to keep our spiritual eyes open and discern spiritual things. Just like you watch out for crazy drivers when you drive, stay alert, for the devil, your adversary is always setting traps. Only the spiritually blind will get caught in his traps.
6. BE STEADFAST IN FAITH
‘Resist him, steadfast in the faith’. The way we resist the devil is to remain steadfast in faith. Stay full of the Word, steadfast in your confession, your devotional life and in living by faith and you will be named among the undevourable!
7. WALK IN GRACE
“God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble’. Live in the throne-room of grace… Live by grace through faith and you will be untouchable, unshakable and undevourable, in Jesus Name!
