Today’s New Covenant nugget is from Luke 5:4-6
When He had stopped speaking, He said to Peter, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” But Peter answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking.
In yesterday’s devotion we studied Daniel’s miracle… today we are going to look at Peter’s miracle of a supernatural net-breaking catch of miracle fish…
One morning, as a multitude pressed about Jesus to hear the Word of God, He was at the Lake of Gennesaret. Jesus saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets. They had been trying to catch fish all night and were tired and ready to go home after a long, unsuccessful night.
Then Jesus got into one of the boats, which was Simon Peter’s, and asked him to push the boat out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.
When Jesus had stopped speaking, He said to Peter, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” But Peter answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.”
And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. So, they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. When Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!” For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken.
That day Peter discovered the miracle working power in the Word of God!
As you read this story, did you notice that the multitudes pressed about Jesus TO HEAR THE WORD OF GOD… not to see miracles, although miracles happened around Jesus on a continual basis… they came to hear the Word.
The multitudes knew that it was the Word that would change their lives, so they followed Jesus and pressed about Jesus in the thousands to hear the Word.
Peter no doubt was impacted by the anointing on the Word of God that Jesus spoke, therefore when Jesus told him to launch out into the deep one more time, he halfheartedly obeyed, even though he was tired, discouraged and had already washed his nets… I say ‘halfheartedly’, because Jesus told Peter to let down his NETS (plural), and Peter said, at your Word I will let down the NET (singular). How many fish would they have caught if Peter actually fully obeyed Jesus?
The Word of God is alive and full of miracle working power!
When you HEAR the Word, faith comes, and when you DO the Word by faith, miracles come!
What can we learn from Peter about how to get a miracle when we really need one?
Press about Jesus to hear the Word, and after hearing, do the Word by faith and you will get your miracle! Like Peter, say, “Jesus, at your Word I will do it!” Then, do not do what the Word says halfheartedly, do it with your whole heart, and then expect a miracle!
Let’s make this confession of faith…
“Jesus, I look to You, my miracle worker…
I expect miracles in my life!
As it was with Moses, Jehoshaphat, Daniel and Peter,
so will it be for me, in Your powerful Name!”
In His amazing love, Nick
