Today’s New Covenant nugget is from 1 Corinthians 1:27-28
God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are.
God uses the simple things in life to do profound things… He turns the mundane into miracles!
JESUS THRIVES IN TURNING SEEMINGLY MUNDANE ACTIONS INTO MIRACLES…
In Luke 5:4-6 Jesus said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless, at Your word I will let down the net.” And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking.
Jesus basically told Peter, “I know that you are tired, but row your boat deep into the water, and do the same thing that you have done without success all night!” A mundane, simple, ‘been there, done that’ thing. Peter did not feel like doing it, but he did what he did because Jesus told him to… “nevertheless, at your word I will let down the net”. The result was a total miracle… Jesus went on to say, “follow me and I will make you a fisher of men.” In other words, Jesus said, “Peter, follow me and I will teach you to change lives and to do things in the same way that I have taught you to catch fish… supernaturally! Everytime you do something simple, or mundane because of my Word, the mundane will be turned into miracles!”
In John 11:39, Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Lazarus was dead and his tomb was sealed with a huge round bolder… It must have taken many men to move that huge, heavy bolder out the groove that they had rolled it into. It was no doubt hard work that, in the natural must have seemed futile, mundane and senseless, nevertheless, at His word, they rolled away the stone and Jesus turned the mundane into a miracle.
Sometimes in life, all we are called to do is to roll away stones for Jesus to raise the dead and do supernatural things…
LIFE IS NOT ALWAYS SPECTACULAR… MUCH OF LIFE IS FILLED WITH FOLLOWING JESUS IN A SEEMINGLY MUNDANE WAY.
The definition of mundane is… ‘lacking interest or excitement, unspectacular, humdrum, boring and dull’. Much of my life is filled with such things… Every Sunday I get up super early, fill coolers with bottled water and ice, drive for thirty minutes and then set up tents, then set up chairs, sound equipment and whatever is needed for our service… most people arrive, sit on the chairs under the tents and enjoy a meeting filled with the supernatural and with miracles… they don’t see the mundane, but they experience the miracles… however, it took Jesus turning the mundane into a miracle for them to be blessed.
When you step out at His Word, it may seem very unspectacular and mundane, but as you roll away the stones, Jesus raises the dead!
I remember, many years ago, while we were pastoring a church in the swamplands of New Orleans, ministering to beautiful people, at what felt like, the very ends of the earth… we lived a humble life in a little house and drove a car that was holding on for dear life. One day, Esther felt led to make a meal for our next door neighbor, a bachelor who worked as a captain of a ship. As far as I remember he was not a believer, just a sweet man living a lonely life.
Esther cooked a lovely meal and we gave it to him served with our best cutlery. The next day he returned the stack of dishes, and in between the dishes were $100 bills. Esther felt led to cook again the next day, and again the dishes were returned with lots of $$$. As long as we did this, the money flowed… we did not ask, we just did what we were led to do, and Jesus turned our mundane into our miracle… as a result of the financial miracle, we were able to purchase a brand new vehicle. Sometimes following Jesus is making meals for people, loving on people, and rolling away stones, so that Jesus can raise them.
LOOK AT WHAT HAPPENED WHEN THEY RAN OUT OF WINE AT A WEDDING IN CANA…
Jesus’ mother Mary noticed that they had run out of wine at the wedding, she told Jesus, “they have no more wine”, to which Jesus replied, “what has that got to do with me”… (on a side note, I wonder what things Jesus may have privately done in their household that led Mary to believe that Jesus would solve the problem… did she see Him walking on water across the fishpond in the back yard as a young boy? Lol… that is speculation, but whatever he did as a child and a young man, Mary knew that Jesus had something special and that He was able to do something that would solve the problem.)
Jesus’ mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it. When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from, but the servants who had drawn the water knew… (John 2:5-9)
Again, you have people doing mundane things at the Word of Jesus, and Jesus turning their mundane works into a miracle… “fill the waterpots with water”… “draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast”. Simple, unspectacular, seemingly mundane things that resulted in a great miracle… as you do what you do in everyday life, as you do seemingly mundane things following the Spirit and acting on Jesus’ Word, He will turn your water into wine!
WHEN YOU DO ANYTHING BY FAITH ACCORDING TO THE WORD, EVEN THE MUNDANE TURNS THINGS INTO MIRACLES!
CONFESSION
“JESUS, WHEN I DO ANYTHING BY FAITH ACCORDING TO YOUR WORD, MUNDANE THINGS TURN INTO MIRACLES.
YOUR COMMANDS ARE FILLED WITH MIRACLE WORKING POWER!
I EXPECT MIRACLES TO FOLLOW ME AS I FOLLOW YOU JESUS!
I WILL DO WHATEVER YOU SAY IN FAITH AND AS I DO, YOU TURN MY WATER INTO WINE!”
In His amazing love, Nick
